The Roping Pen Magazine was started in Florida, by Bronc and Teri Fanning. After a lifetime of roping for a living, Bronc saw the need for a roping publication and since then it has grown and become the source of rodeo and team roping news and events throughout the Southeast area of the country.
The first issue was printed in April of 1992 with intentions of being a southeastern publication. However, the interest and circulation quickly grew beyond the area and the need to become more centrally located prompted a move to Tennessee in 1993 and then again to Texas in 1998. In October of 2003 the paper moved back to Tennessee…… This time with new owners, John (JD) and Tracy Malone.
JD and Tracy published The Roping Pen and enjoyed the years they spent serving their team roping and rodeo community friends with a quality publication that you recognize today. After a long battle with cancer, Tracy went to see the Lord in December 2012 leaving JD to publish the magazine. A year and a half later, JD, with ideas of changing directions in his life sold the magazine to Ryan Davis who owns and operates it today.
Dear Roping pen fans,
I truly hope you enjoy the magazine and the hard work I put behind every issue. This magazine has been a huge accomplishment for me and I enjoy the chance to do something I enjoy. The Roping Pen allows me to stay connected and help promote the sports I enjoy. I have worked both ends of the arena. From a bareback rider in my younger years to a team roper today, I have had the chance to see the inside of the rodeo arena from many angles. I have produced events, judged events, announced and been a part of rodeo for most of my life. Growing up in New Mexico, where my family and I still live today, I have a chance to get involved in the publication business over ten years ago. This opportunity has allowed me to work along side some of the biggest and best rodeo and team roping associations in the country, some of the biggest and best athletes and I am excited everyday to be part of this industry. I have met and talked to hundreds of folks along the way that are part of this great industry. I hope to continue to promote The Roping Pen and use it as an avenue to help others pursue their dreams and promote the greatest sport on dirt.
I hope you enjoy the magazine. Have a great day and may God bless you and your family!
